Reflections on the Season
It’s been nearly a week since the season ended, and that’s given me time to reflect.
I was genuinely excited going into this campaign. The adrenaline rush of last season’s great escape under Leigh and Ben was still fresh, and with a full pre-season ahead, I believed they could shape the squad their way. Several players came and went, but a solid core began to form—led by our new captain, Matt Britton.
Pre-season was mixed, but there were glimpses of promise. As the season kicked off, results didn’t go our way, and we exited both cup competitions at the first hurdle and by the end of October, Leigh and Ben parted ways with the club.
Asa and Niall stepped in on an interim basis, and there was an immediate bounce in performances and morale. Their ability to motivate and galvanise the group was clear—and had circumstances been different, Asa might have continued in the role then.
There was strong interest in the managerial vacancy. Following a thorough interview process, we appointed Rob Dray. Rob, alongside Connor, impressed us with a clear vision that aligned with the club’s ambitions.
Despite their hard work, things didn’t unfold as hoped, and Rob left the club in March. The 5-0 defeat to Basingstoke marked my lowest moment at Tiverton—it felt like we were down and out. I personally enjoyed working with Rob; unfortunately, it just didn’t work out this time.
Once again, we turned to Asa, this time assisted by Steven Orchard. What followed was nothing short of remarkable. Performances, results, and team spirit transformed. If you only looked at results since they took over, we sat 7th in the league. It quickly became clear that no further manager search was needed—we had our team. We were delighted to confirm Asa and Steven would lead us into the 2025/26 season.
Securing our survival against Marlow on the final day was something truly special.
Changing managers mid-season is never ideal, and I take full responsibility for that. We all make mistakes, and I’m no exception. But when something’s not working, decisive action is necessary. Often, there’s more going on behind the scenes than can be made public—for the sake of those involved. Managers and players are human beings, with families and feelings. These decisions are never easy.
Away from the first team, there were big positives: the Under-18s had a strong campaign under Alan Findlay, and our new Girls’ Under-16s stormed to a league title. We also announced an exciting new partnership between Tiverton Town and Twyford Spartans—a crucial step for the club’s future.
To achieve what we want, we need the backing of our community. We need you. Get involved. Help shape the next chapter. This is an opportunity we can’t afford to miss—let’s take it.
So much happened this season that I can’t fit it all into one message, but I’ll finish with some well-deserved thanks.
Thank you to our amazing supporters—your faith never wavered. Thanks to every volunteer and member of staff who kept the club running week in and week out. Thanks to the past and present management teams, to the players, and to their families.
A huge shout out to the Media Team — Simon, Jake, Darren, Rick, Aaron, and Tyler. You’re doing great work, and I’m excited to see what next season brings.
Thanks to Lee and Jason on the commercial side — outstanding work all year.
Special thanks to our Chairman, Ian — without him, there’d be no club. He’s as Yellow as they come. And to Kimm, Deb, Viv, Andy, Mark, Clare, and Olly on the Executive Board—it’s a privilege to work alongside you every day.
It’s been a tough season, no doubt. But I truly believe the next one will be unforgettable.
Onwards and upwards 💛
